The Full-Time Staff Advisory Group took the tour of Pierpont Farms on Friday, June 20, 2014. Rob and Angela Hemwall are the owners of Pierpont Farms, located just 15 minutes south of Columbia.

Campus Dining Services has been buying fresh seasonal produce from Pierpont Farms for almost four years, purchasing tomatoes, bell peppers, summer squash, zucchini, cucumbers, and lettuce.  Pierpont Farms uses organic methods on the 34 acre farm to grow a variety of vegetables that are sold to food service operations and grocery stores in Columbia.  Most of the produce is grown in three High Tunnels, which allow for earlier season planting and later fall harvests.  They also have a ½ acre Haygrove Tunnel which creates an ideal environment for growing tomatoes.  This year alone they will have 5,000 tomato plants.

“Having our staff visit and learn about the source of where our products come from gives them an understanding and appreciation for the quality ingredients that we serve”, said Executive Chef Eric Cartwright.
